Hardware Courses and the Undergraduate Computer Science Curriculum at Small Colleges

چکیده

Hardware courses have always been a part of the undergraduate Computer Science (CS) curriculum at small colleges. However, these courses are often viewed by many faculty members either as a necessity to satisfy accreditation requirements or, at best, as a traditional but useless part of the CS program in liberal arts settings. The material in these courses is often considered selfcontained, and the relationship with other courses in the CS curriculum is rarely emphasized. In this paper we take a closer look at the place and relevance of hardware courses in the CS curriculum of small colleges.

Teaching with Parallella: a First Look in an Undergraduate Parallel Computing Course *

This paper describes our experience integrating the Parallella, an energy efficient single board computer (SBC) with 18 cores, into an undergraduate parallel computing course. The board's small form-factor, high number of cores and relative cheapness makes it a very attractive option for introducing students to parallel computing. We describe and reflect on our experiences using the Parallella ...

The Effect of Changing Programming Language to Student Success in Undergraduate Computer Science Curriculum

. We measure and compare the effects of changing the programming language in introductory level courses (Computer Science I and II) in undergraduate Computer Science (CS) curriculum. The study presents the example of University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) case, where we present the results of two approaches: Approach 1 where both CS I and CS II courses are taught in Java, and Aprroach 2 where CS I...

Integrating the teaching of computer organization and architecture with digital hardware design early in undergraduate courses

This paper describes a new way to teach computer organization and architecture concepts with extensive hands-on hardware design experience very early in computer science curricula. While describing the approach, it addresses relevant questions about teaching computer organization, computer architecture and hardware design to students in computer science and related fields. The justification to ...

Integrating Parallel Computing into the Undergraduate Curriculum at Texas State University: Experiences from the First Year

The widespread deployment of multicore-based computer systems over the last decade has brought about drastic changes in the software and hardware landscape. Yet, many undergraduate computer science (CS) curricula have not embraced the pervasiveness of parallel computing. In their first years, CS undergraduates are typically exclusively trained to think and program sequentially. However, too fir...
